Simply You

You are not your To-Do List.

You are not your Career.

You are not your Feelings.

You are not your Thoughts.

You are not your Relationships.

You are not your Achievements.

You are not your Talents.

You are not your Bank Account Balance.

You are not your Possessions.

You are not What Others Think About You.

You are, simply, You.

What else are you “not”? Anything else to add to the list? Please share in the comments. Thanks!

Hi Jay – Great way to put it!

Hi Nahl – Excellent additions. I didn’t think about those. 🙂

Hi Dani – Thanks! I appreciate it.

Hi Patty – Similar to “I am not my Career”, but can probably also feel more consuming since it’s all yours! Thanks for the addition.

  1. Hi Amanda – Great, timely reminders. I need to remember “I am not my business.” At one point in my life I thought I wanted to be, that I couldn’t discern between the two. But now I see the wisdom in the separation. And to play off what Jay said: “I am not my shoulds.”

  2. Amanda — This is fun….but I add the word “only” to mine.

I am not only my HAIR (it drives me crazy)
I am not only my fears
I am not only my blog/writtings
I am not only my past (thanks Karen)
I am not only my expectations.

I am all of these and more. They are the unique mix that makes me the special person I am.

Great post. Thanks for the inspiration:~)

  3. great post, amanda!

    to add,

    1) You are not the labels given to you.
(Note: Oftentimes we are trapped at the labels given to us. I wish that we’d all ditch the labeling; live and let live!)
    2) You are not your ugly scars.
(Note: Some scars are permanently embedded in our bodies, and most of the time we tend to associate ourselves with these scars that we forget how to move on.)
    3) You are not frigid, move your body!
(Note: I am thinking of this because sometimes we tend not to freely move our bodies; we tend to stiffen our necks to appear strong; we tend not to smile to appear intimidating.)
    4) You are not your boss’ scape goat.
(Note: Sometimes people tend to blame us for the mistakes that have befallen them.)
    5) YOU ARE NOT DEAD, LIVE!

Hi Karen – I love “You are not your past.” Nice one.

Hi Sara – I really like the addition of the word “only.” That gives the a little bit of a different twist. Thanks. 🙂

Hi dutdotcom – Great list! #3 especially is one I would not have thought of, but you are absolutely right, You are not rigid! Thanks.
