Using Your Intuition

Sometimes when I make a decision, I can’t really explain how I arrived at it.  That’s not to say that I’m not clear on the direction I have picked, because usually I am.  It’s just that, if someone were to ask, I wouldn’t have a list of pros and cons to give them.  The true answer is usually “because that’s the direction I felt I should go in.”

Using your intuition can be tricky, because you can’t be “sure” of where you are going, and, yet, with the feeling that it gives you, there can be no mistake that you are headed in the right direction.

When you access intuition, you are getting answers from your Center, so they are always correct for you, even if they don’t seem rational on the surface.  Putting sensory information aside, you are left with only what “feels” right.  Trusting that feeling is key to getting to where you want to go.

Intuition Is Good For…

Quick Decisions: When you need to make a decision quickly, you don’t have time to gather much information.  This is a perfect time to make an intuitive decision.  In that instant, what feels right to you?   Because there is not much time, your “feeling” decision often beats out your “thinking” decision.  Go with that.

Tough Decisions: When you are at a fork in the road, and you don’t know which way to go, use your intuition to pull you to the left or the right.  Instead of getting frustrated and worried over making a decision, let that answer arise from your Center.  You may not know exactly where your decision will lead you, but you can trust the strength of your intuition.

Knowing What You Want: Knowing what you want out of life doesn’t come from other people, or a magazine or a movie, it comes from you.  Being able to trust your internal guidance is essential because sometimes what we want for ourselves seems far-fetched, strange or maybe even impossible.  When you are receiving an answer you have to take it as it comes.

Increase Your Intuition

Start Small: You can practice using your intuition by starting on small things.  Which route should you take home from work?  Should you eat lunch at this restaurant or that restaurant?  Practice on things that don’t have huge outcomes for your life.  Trust yourself to pick the one that is the best choice for you right now.

Feel Your Decision: Instead of gathering information, make a “feeling” decision.  The best way I can describe this is you should feel “pulled” towards the decision, attracted to it.  If you feel that, trust it.

Shut Off The Noise: Using your intuition is really difficult if you can’t “hear” it.  When your mind is always spinning – with thoughts, worries and possibilities – you can’t hear anything but your own chatter.  Practice being quiet – internally – and your intuition will flourish.

Your First Thought: Your intuition often shows up in the first thoughts that “pop” into your mind.  The ones that get to you before you have a chance to brush them away.  Practice going with your first thought.

In what situations do you find yourself relying on your intuition?  Share your thoughts in the comments.  🙂

  1. Hi Amanda — this reminds me, I’ve been reading a book called Waking The Tiger, and it’s about getting in touch with what the author calls the “felt sense,” which is basically intuition. One great exercise involves looking at a bunch of pictures (preferably of you, but it can be of something else) and noticing how your body feels when you look at each one. This has been an interesting way to contact what my instincts are telling me.

Hi Chris – That’s an interesting exercise. Getting used to trusting the feelings you have in your body takes some practice. This seems like a good way to notice how you feel.

Hi Jonathan – I like how you said that. Many times we are following things outside of our self and we our lead away from our true intention. Intuition keeps us on the right path.

  3. When I have to make a decision, I try to listen to how my body feel about the choice I am about to make. My physical body says a lot.

  4. One thing that’s helped me trust my intuition and looking back and realizing even when I’ve been wrong, it’s all worked out in the end. I’ve had far more regrets when I’ve let somebody else do the deciding because I didn’t trust myself or made no decision at all.

It’s strangely liberating to be able to say even something so small as “I want tacos for lunch” without doing a whole pro/con checklist and worrying about all sorts of silly stuff.

Hi Carla – Thanks for your comment! That’s a great idea. We often ignore sensations in our bodies, but they tell us a lot.

Hi Tess – Nice! The more you use it the better it gets. 🙂

Hi Tracy – Haha, you’re right about those tacos. Such a small decision and yet many people simply can’t make a decision about what they want. Also, I know exactly what you mean when you say that you regret letting others make the decision for you. That has never worked out for me either. Thanks for your comment!

    hi !
    A very great morning !
What i feel is like this.
The language of the body is INSTINCT.
The language of the mind is INTELLEGENCE.
The language of the soul is INTUITION.
Atlast request to all of you to work on this subject, and help the mankind to learn his own language, so that s/he can communicate with himself. Nothing like it ! GOD’S AMAZING GIFT TO EACH AND EVERYBODY.
